Over the past few years, our staff team has grown and changed. In 2019, we want to help you get to know the Gateway team! Each month a few of our blogs will introduce you to a different staff member. This week we will be meeting Sam Evans.

Sam, what is your job title?

I am an Elder and I have particular responsibilities for pastoral oversight and teaching.

Can you briefly explain your job to us?

I spend my time helping others follow Jesus, love one another, make disciples and understand the Bible.

What is your favourite part of your job?

I love the privilege of being able to meet with people from church or who are new to church. Sometimes it’s hard if people are struggling, and sometimes it’s exciting, but I love doing it. I’m also a complete Bible geek and love studying and hearing God speak to me from the Bible. I’m doing some theology study at the moment, which I’m really enjoying.

So as a self-proclaimed Bible geek, what is your favourite Bible verse or story? Why is it your favourite?

I love 2 Corinthians generally, because of Paul’s transparency about his brokenness but God’s grace with him in his weakness. Key verses are chapter 4 verse 7: ‘We have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.’ Also, chapter 12 verse 9 ‘My grace is sufficient to you, my power is made perfect in weakness’ (I have this tattooed onto my forearms!). I love these verses because I’m broken in a broken world but God uses brokenness to show His beauty. It speaks to me of His amazing grace.

What do you like to do to relax after your work day?

If I’m only working in the day time, I love to mess around with my kids, put them to bed and then eat a nice meal with Han, my wife. We enjoy chatting lots over food and debriefing our days. Sometimes a quick jog or some sport can help me relax, too. If I’m working late it can be hard, as we need to get up early with the girls. Sometimes watching comedy or NFL can help me switch off.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

Chocolate eating perhaps or attempting to cook ridiculously lavish but delicious meals.

Sam works for the church on Sunday-Thursday.
